SV Darmstadt 98 football club wanted to bring together multiple data sources and improve the visualisation of athletics and scouting data. Woodmark solved these challenges by introducing Amazon QuickSight for visualisation and Amazon Glue for serverless ETL. This made scouting analysis more efficient.
The challenges
Data area
In order to make informed scouting decisions, the use of state-of-the-art data analysis is essential in addition to a strong network of contacts. Until now, scouting has been based on a selective database or narratives, with data queries on players being made in various ways, both ad hoc and distributed across different systems and users. There was no central, reliable data platform that could serve as a ‘single point of truth’.
Visualisation area
The visualisation of the data was distributed across different systems and users, which led to considerable effort in reporting. For example, the stress level of the players could only be recorded through manual data integration. Targeted and detailed reporting was not possible. The club was faced with the challenge of collating meaningful data via various channels despite utilising heterogeneous data sources. This was very costly and time-consuming and often did not lead to the desired results. At the same time, meaningful, automated reporting was not possible due to the different data sources.
Objectives
Darmstadt 98's goal was clear: the club wanted a clear data situation for a better overview in scouting in order to be able to identify players with potential more quickly based on multiple data sources. A clear visualisation was to create objective, data-based comparability between the players. With the help of an athletics dashboard, injury prevention was to be improved and a stable performance level achieved.
Procedure
Data area
By integrating multiple external data sources and automating with AWS Glue via defined workflows, the organisation was able to significantly improve data quality. The experts at Woodmark have clearly demarcated development environments and introduced a version control system to track and manage changes to files and directories over time. The highest security standards and data quality were taken into account. The central data lake now provides full transparency and an overview of the association's data. Another milestone was the creation of a comprehensive player database, which enables deeper insights and optimised analyses.

Following the connection and integration of various data sources, a central QuickSight dashboard was introduced to provide a comprehensive visualisation of key performance KPIs. In addition, best practices for effective visualisation were implemented to further improve the user-friendliness and informative value of the data presented.
Advantages for SV Darmstadt 98
The experts at Woodmark were able to help significantly improve data management and performance analysis: In addition to a customised dashboard for visualising central KPIs, we were able to support the association in connecting and integrating multiple data sources, automating workflows and introducing a central data lake. The clear presentation of the key performance indicators enables an intuitive understanding and decisions can now be made objectively on the basis of a centralised database.
